To achieve this, we used the highest quality analog components available, from operational amplifiers to integrated circuits. In many cases, we developed entirely new components from scratch. By employing modular circuit boards, each containing 8 channels, we combined the flexibility and durability of individual boards for each channel with the cost-effectiveness and minimal cabling of large integrated boards. ONYX microphone preamps were a crucial focus of our development efforts. Designed based on our proven XDR preamps from the VLZ series, the Onyx preamps surpass standalone preamps in all essential parameters, yet come at a fraction of the cost. The Perkins EQ circuitry, designed by audio engineering veteran Cal Perkins, draws inspiration from classic "British EQ" circuits. This design aims to deliver the sweet sound of British consoles with improved control and minimal phase shift. The construction of the ONYX 80 Series is built to last, with a modular monocoque design reinforced with aluminum extrusions and steel bulkheads. The console undergoes rigorous testing for impact, shock, heat, vibration, and humidity, ensuring its durability in the most demanding environments. Key features of the individual channels include premium ONYX microphone preamps, 4-band Perkins EQ, phantom power, 8 AUX sends, direct outputs via DB25 connectors, LED level indicators, smooth 100mm faders, and more. The master section features stereo AUX inputs, AUX send masters, groups with faders, a matrix, mute groups, talkback mic input, LED meters, and more. Power features include a built-in universal power supply accepting 100-240VAC, with an optional rack-mountable redundant power supply.
